"We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness."
1. What symbolic meaning is there in the continuous artificial light--& no windows?
2. Winston's physiological instinct to survive overpowers his psychological need to hold on to the truth: 2+2=5. How is this so? (Recall here his quote on page 86: "It struck him that in moments of crisis one is never fighting against an external enemy but always against one's own body.")
3. Why can there be no wrongthinking even in those they kill? Why does O'Brien want to convince Winston that 2+2=5?
4. Why do you think Orwell dedicated almost one-third of this novel to Winston's ordeal at the Ministry of Truth?
5. What do you think Orwell wants to show us with the arrrests of Ampleforth and Parsons?

  2. That with no windows or natural light coming in the prisoners wouldn't know what time of day it was and would have to believe whatever the guards told them..
O'brien tries to convince winston that 2+2=5 because if he is trying to control what winstone is thinking. Trying to convince him that all that the party says is true and agreeing to whatever O'brien tells him the less they beat up winston.
I think that Orwell wants us to know that Ampleforth and Parsons were probably doubting the history of the party and so they were commiting thoughcrime...and that even party members or people in the party can be caught...Cause there's no one you can trust cuz they will just be spies then turn you in..

  3. 1. artificial light is continuous inhuman. i think it is used to break people down like the continuous drop of water.
    2. the constant pain of having his spine broken in two. its easier to be complacent.
    3. they want no martyrs. martyrs gave meaning to the causes they were fighting for after they died. if they make the martyrs die after the start a fight for big brother. once the broken prisoner gives in, its another martyr for big brother.
4.i agree with Ashley. he did it to put double think into a situation where you can know its happening.
    5.ditto

Ashley is something wrong with my computer or is your post messed up?

  4. I think that the reason why O'Brien wants to convince Winston that 2+2=5 is because it is a symbol of believing whatever Big Brother wants you to believe. Orwell meant 2+2=4 as a symbolic interpretation of personal freedom. Showing how the government can manipulate even the minds of legitimate rebels shows how much power they really have. It makes sense that the pyschological torture was worse for Winston because his brain is the only thing he has left that is (or was) his own. And to answer your question, Ashley, I think Ampleforth loved goats. I mean, who doesn't? :D hehe

  5. Everyone pretty much said everything that I was going to say. Except the fact that Winston is agreeing to everything O'Brian says because he begins to like O'Brian because O'Brian stops the pain and O'Brian keeps telling Winston that he is insane and torture will heal that. I think O'Brian is very good at manipulating peoples minds because Winston believes everything that he tells him and when Winston asks whats in room 101 O'Brian responds "Everybody knows whats in Room 101"
