Post #6 - 1984 Book 2.9-10 (due 5/3/10)
1. "It was only an 'opeless fancy, / It passed like an Ipril dye, / But a look an' a word an' the dreams they stirred / They 'ave stolen my 'eart awye!" Ironic? Symbolic? Care to discuss these song lyrics.
2. "We are the dead." "We are the dead." "You are the dead." What details come together as book 2 ends?
(Ashley--I can't post Tuesday's blog yet without giving away plot details...)

  1. 1. using the principals of doublespeak i simultaneously understand what it means but do not at all. they talk about reading the "book" and how it would steal your soul. it warns you to be careful what you dreamed about and how it could give yourself away.
2.after reading the book Winston immediately sees the world in a truthful light.

  2. Oh my goodness, I hate Mr. Charrington. Why does everyone have to be a spy in this book? I think that those lyrics are symbolic of how Winston has felt this whole time. He has these hopes that the Party will be destroyed someday but he's also really fatalistic about everything. He sort of uses doublethink when he thinks of the Party - he's hopeful and hopeless at the same time. I think that Winston and Julia were really stupid to rent out that room.

  3. I find it really annoying that Mr. Charrington chose to give them over to the Thought Police now....although I can understand the timing of it. He timed it perfectly in a sense, right when Winston felt there could be a definite hope for change. The whole thing is annoying, I agree with Mary.

I like how he still explained the paper weight as Winston's world was crashing to the ground.

  4. I just realized why Mr. Charington didnt need a telescreen was because he was a member of the thought police.
You'd think Winston would have caught on to that.
Wait is Mr. Charington a member i'm just confused now....does someone want to explain to me :)

I feel so bad for Winston and Julia however they should have never rented the room that was just ignorant he should know that no one is to be trusted by now!

  6. I agree with everyone...I can't believe that mr.charington is part of the thought police.I thought that he was one of the fewest people who did want to be a spy and be able to change the government. but then again everyone in the book are spies..i mean even kids are trained to be spies to spy their parents.
So know im wondering whats going to happen next?
Are they going to kill them?

  8. I had thought that since Mr. Charington was in an antique store ... with no telescreen that something was up. I also agree with everyone and I too am wondering if their going to be killed, but I don't think so since there was a bit of foreshadow in the book that they would be tortured.
I agree with Shambre'. (the outside thing).
