"They had done it! They had done it at last!" And who remembers Syme?
1. Discuss Hate Week and how it functions (what purpose it serves) in the year 1984.
2. How's the varicose ulcer of Winston's doing these days...what might it symbolize?
3. What do you find significant about the lifestyle of an Inner Party member?
4. What is the meaning of Winston's dream of his mother & sister (within the glass paperweight). What meaning does he find in it? And you?
5. Any predictions about what comes next?

  1. i remember syme
    1. hate week is like a week of two minutes hate. i imagine it to be like veisha at ISU where certain groups of housing create floats or help with the decorating of the event.
    2. the varicose ulcer disappeared. i believe it symbolizes how sex with julia is a cure of the symptoms not a cure for big brother.
    3. the inner party member is a lifestyle of luxury while they only make up 5% of the population. they are given the privilege of privacy. although it be much less than the proles they get more than the outer party. the outer party seems the most repressed despite the poorness of the entire population.
    4. his dream is creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppy! the meaning of the dream is to show how rough the begining of the new big brother government was.
    5. i believe O'Brian is captured.

  2. Honestly i can't remember who Syme is?

And his dream is kind of creepy... dreaming of him killing his mother?....why is he having such werid dreams....

So is O'Brien part of brotherhood? Is he spying on Winston or he trying to help him...

  3. I remember Syme, he was too smart for his own good. And Winston knew that he was going to be vaporized because he was too smart, he knew too much of what was going on to be kept around.

I agree with Matt on the whole Hate Week. Except instead of a happy atmosphere and environment, it is more of a dark, and to me it seems dangerous, even though I'm sure nothing dangerous can happen there, since the people are allowed to do only so much with themselves.

I think the ulcer could symbolize hope in a sense. It disappeared when Winston has a gleam of hope in him, when he feels that things are going to be alright finally, and that he's happy with himself and Julia, and happy that O'Brien came to him.

I have a feeling that everything good for Winston is about to end. Its come to the point that he is happy, and that he is somewhat content with what he has, there is nowhere for this to go but down for him I'm afraid....

  4. I vaguely recall the name Syme.
Wait i thought Katherine disappeared and now Winston is thinking of killing her to marry Julia or becoming a prole and changing his identity....... i am verrry confused
The hate song are they just adding more and more hate towards Eurasia or is hate just a past time for them.
Is it only the proles that can rebel in Winston's mind or is every body just to far gone.

  5. When they tell each other that torture will make each of them hand to other one in but not stop their loving one another i believe is just a naive understatement of the power of the party's power over the mind of the people. Their words I believe will prove to be a monstrous irony.
The meeting between Winston and O'brian push Winston to a new level of optimism and fatalism.
O'brian i believe symbolized a power figure that is willing to undermine the party.
As for my predictions i believe they will both be caught and tortured.

  6. Syme was the smart guy who was working on making an eleventh edition Newspeak dictionary. Winston sat with him during lunch. I guess Winston was right about Syme being too smart for his own good. I don't really understand why he was vaporized with no warning. Did he question Big Brother or did he do a thoughtcrime? Also, I think that the reason why Winston's ulcer is gone is because it symbolizes hope when it disappears.

  7. Syme now seems to play a bigger role upon censorship and what the instinctive human is.
I know they do not have a court system for vaporization and that it is very sudden and subjective but I would like to know more about how/what gave him away besides making side comments to Winston. The ulcer thing was very odd but I think it symbolizes the internal festering in Winston on an outwardly symbolic form.

  8. What else is left to say?? I finally was able to get on every ones comments are very insightfull i dont know what else to add??
    1. for hate week i think it is just giving them a dose of hate big enough for the entire year!! There creating of hate in the people doesnt make sense to me to me it would not only breed hate against the enemy but cuz violence and crime in the population?? wouldnt a type of riot break out if this was really happening??
    2. the ulcer going away is Orwell trying to tell us that Winston's stress and unhappiness is recedeing as he finds out there is coruption happening and he is not the only one out there wanting to overthrow this dictatorship also he is happy to find another human being like julia that has not been completely changed by the influence of culture and still finds enjoyment out of something as human and free as intercourse. He sees real human nature in someone and has indeed found evidence that human loving, curious and wild nature has not been deleted completely by the party!!
    3. The inner party lives alot better than the rest of the population which is showing they are no better than a monarchy as the suck all there wealth out of the people below them they really have not revolutionized the idea of government as they are in complete control and seem to live of the people. They also can turn off the telescreens which is wild to me that they would allow that to happen it shows again the dictatorship of Big Brother as the rich and powerful also are some what above the law!!
