Welcome to our blog over 1984!
One of the expectations for this unit is to log on to this website at least three different days during the week. You may receive credit in 3 different ways:
1) If you are confused by something encountered in the assigned reading, you may post a question over that reading for your classmates to answer.
2)You may answer a question(s)over the assigned reading posted by your classmate(s).
3)You may respond to a post I've left you on the blog.
MAKE SURE YOU:
1)Include your name so I can give you credit.
2)Use appropriate language or no credit will be given.
3)Your post must be insightful or worthwhile or no credit will be given.
4)Post questions, answers, reflections PRIOR to coming to class. You will receive no credit for posts made after we've already discussed the reading in class. THIS IS MEANT TO BE a fun, interactive activity, so engage back & forth with your classmates as you attempt to come to an understanding of this novel. BLOG ON! - Ms. Nis
....I thought it was depressing....in a happy way. Winston gives up his mind but the last chapter is Winston being victorious. I had a lot of mixed feelings at the end of the book. In room 101 is the worst thing in the world.
I didn't like it. Love never overcame hatred, sure he realized that he loved Big Brother, but thats not real love. I would have much rather had the Ministry of Love shoot him, that way he would have at least died for a reason, because he loved Julia. Plus, Big Brother is probably not even real, so therefore he doesn't love anybody...It was a depressing ending, but I suppose thats what Orwell was going for since the whole rest of the book was kind of depressing..
What I would find in room 101 would probably be bees...
I didnt like the ending either...it was to depressing...I didn't think Winston was going to betray Julia at all...I thought he loved her more... I thought that Winston was going to die at the end cause he didnt want to betray Julia..But i don't think WInston even loves BIg Brother he's just accepting it...
I think i woould find in room would probably be snakes..
As I was reading the last few chapters, I had a suspicion that it would end like this... I think everyone is on the same page about the end being depressing.
For most of the book, Winston knew in the back of his mind that he was going to die, and yet he still continued to do the things that he did. So even though he eventually succumbed to Big Brother, he still dreams about the day the Party will kill him. He did not rebel against the Party for freedom, but because he wants the Party to kill him. I think that is somewhat victorious for Winston, because his death is inevitable now.
this book is very depressing i agree with diana i didnt think he would betray julia i also agree that he is just accepting "loving" big brother. he wishes for death and it will come and it will bring him peace. I would find bugs and/ or scary people in masks!! :( and never being able to get away from them
First off I would probably find spiders (or just one giant spider, like Shelob from LOTR) in room 101. I'm glad someone else in this class hates them as much as I do. Ugh... Anyway, I don't think that Winston actually loves Big Brother - he's either accepted his fate or is already fully brainwashed. The government just had him in confinement for weeks so it makes sense if he has gone sort of insane. This is a depressing ending but I feel like most of us were expecting it to be in one way or another.

ReplyDeleteMatt - Ms. Nis here: why/how do you see Winston being victorious in the last chapter? What would YOU find in Room 101?
